Yellowstone
Moon In Steam Over Old Faithful
I was out photographing the moonrise, and I realized I had left my high speed film in the room. Given all the layers of clothes I had on (it was about 5 degrees F), and how much time it would have taken me to get back to the room and get the film, I shot several time exposures. What luck! It took a lot of work to get rid of the color shifts and fringing artifacts from the film scan, but I think it was worth it.
Dark Scene I
Castle Geyser Erupting I
Tom Murphy, who ran the winter Yellowstone trip, spends hundreds of days a year in the park, so knows what geyser is going to erupt when. I liked the backlit steam plume, but had to work with the scan to get the colors in the bacterial mats at the bottom of the pond to show, even though I was using a polarizer.
Yellowstone Grove in Early Morning Light
This was an amazing morning. It had snowed and been very cold, so many of the trees were coated with fine white hoar frost. The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon and break through the mist and steam.
Lamar Valley Sunrise Sun Hammer
This sunrise at Lamar Valley in Yellowstone was quite special. When the sunlight hits a cloud of ice crystals, it sometimes creates a small rainbow arc, called a sun hammer. This one was quite beautiful and lasted several minutes.
Early Winter Morning Bison
An extremely cold night had left hoarfrost on the background trees and this buffalo. The early morning light separated him nicely from the background.g

Yellowstone Bank Reflection
We stopped by a lovely creek that had several settings (and a beaver). I shot several abstracts of the snow and ice patterns with the bank reflections. This is my favorite
Yellowstone Grass On Bank
A nice, serene composition. Grass balances patterns in snow on other side of the creek.
Yellowstone Winter Sun
My winter trip to Yellowstone was most memorable. One of my favorite pictures is this one of the winter sun through a fir tree. I like shooting into the sun, but in film there are usually strange colors shifts to deal with and in digital, minimizing burned out highlights is problematic.
Yelowstone Winter Trees
This particular morning of my Yellowstone winter trip was memorable. There had been a hoar frost the night before and many of the trees wore a wonderful ethereal white coating. This was taken in the area near Old Faithful.

Lone Tree With Cloud Halo - Yellowstone
The winter landscape at Yellowstone near the hot springs and fumeroles is really other-worldly. I spotted this lone, blackened tree and as I took the picture, noticed how well it was framed by the steam and clouds. Getting the color and light balance of the snow right is a bit tricky, but worked out well in this shot.
Semicircular Pool in Snow
Nice semi abstract. Half of pool, steam, edge and distant trees and steam.
